Ingrid Baars

Since her graduation from Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam in 1992, Baars’ illustrations have been published in magazines such as Cosmopolitan, Playboy, Elegance, Elle and Man. In 1997, Baars won the Illustration of the Year Award from BNO.

Ingrid Baars’ art cannot be classified into one singular category.  She successfully uses mixed-media technique to represent the contrasts and intensity of her subjects bringing her visual art to life.

Baars reworks photographed and digitally manipulated elements into luminous, mysterious and poetic images.  Balanced compositions, subdued colours and strong forms captivate the viewer.  The figures play a subtle erotic game, being attractive and unapproachable at the same time.

The combination of familiarity and strangeness, figurative and abstract creates the tension that can electrify the less careful viewer.  The images contain an implicate warning: some mysteries are better left unsolved.
